Lisa Scheer of Duisburg was diagnosed with bone cancer when she was 12 years old. Describing her ordeal, Lisa recalled, "The pain in my leg was unbearable, and the swelling got so bad that walking became a struggle. In the beginning, my parents brushed it off as growing pains, but alarm bells rang when we discovered a lump. That's when we rushed to see a doctor." Medical scans uncovered a tumour in Lisa's right leg, and subsequent tests confirmed the worst - it was bone cancer. Scheer was rushed into surgery, where, thankfully, doctors managed to remove the tumour, saving her life. However, the victory was bittersweet. Lisa faced a gruelling two years of chemotherapy and was left with a leg that no longer functioned properly. "The cancer left the bones in my right leg thin, weak, and stiff, and they had to rebuild it with titanium. For 14 years, walking was a struggle, and I even needed a cane. I just couldn't accept what happened to me; I hated my leg. It felt foreign. The scar was so ugly, and the joint was frozen stiff as if it was cemented from the inside," she explained. "All I ever wished for was to be a normal kid again, to have a normal life. To make matters worse, I experienced mean classmates, constant teasing and bullying, which made me even more self-conscious." In 2017, Lisa, who trained to become a dental technician, made the decision to have the leg amputated above the knee. "People thought I was mad for choosing to cut off my leg, but I was certain it was the right call. I wanted more out of life than just managing and getting by. The leg was no longer serving any purpose; it was just complicating my life and making me so unhappy," she recalled. "When I shared my thoughts with my doctor, I was taken aback by his support, suggesting it could indeed be the best - and probably the only - option. With his approval, I felt unstoppable. The surgery was risky and lasted three hours. When I woke up, I was finally free from the leg. I was so happy. I felt like I had been reborn." Although Lisa initially battled with phantom leg pain - a phenomenon where the brain tricks the body into feeling pain in the amputated limb - having her leg amputated relieved her of the persistent pain and depression she had endured before. She was equipped with a prosthetic leg and relearned how to walk over the following year. With newfound confidence coupled with her distinctive look Lisa is today an alternative model and tattoo artist with an Instagram following of 35,800 followers. Through her work, she showcases her tattoos and prosthetic leg, aiming to inspire others to celebrate their unique features and differences. She gets lots of attention from admirers on social media, who tell her how beautiful, inspiring, and sexy she is. "My modelling journey began four years ago when I accompanied my little cousin to a photo shoot. I was immediately captivated by the experience. My early days as a punk, followed by my love for metal music, have significantly shaped my distinctive style," she noted. "My tattoos are a major part of my identity, and although I've lost count of them, I'm committed to continuing this art project until my entire body is covered." In addition to her ink, Lisa has several piercings, gauged earlobes, and her tongue split. "I embrace my appearance because it's a true expression of who I am. I believe in the beauty and uniqueness of every individual, and I think self-love is key to shining your own beauty," she added. Speaking of love, Lisa's life has been further enriched after she met and fell in love with fellow tattoo artist Christopher Real. The pair met in June 2023 and live together with their three-year-old dog, Lucifer. Their bond is anchored in a profound mutual appreciation for creativity and art, further strengthened by their shared commitment to a vegan lifestyle, which reflects their respect for all living beings and the environment. "Christopher has been an incredible blessing in my life. It's as if the universe conspires to surprise me just when I think I've got it all figured out, sweeping me off my feet yet again, but always in the most wonderful ways," Lisa concluded.
