Modern naval warfare is born as the Union???s Monitor (left) and the Confederacy???s Merrimac meet in Hampton Roads outside Norfolk, Va. on Feb. 21, 1862. The radically designed Monitor was built as an iron ship; the Merrimac was an old frigate with a covering of iron armor. The battle ended in a draw, the guns of those days unable to penetrate iron ship or iron armor. But from then on, the wood ship was outdated for warfare. (AP Photo)
