Working day and night in all weathers the minesweepers keep 1,100 miles of Channel clear for shipping around the coast of Great Britain, shown Dec. 20, 1941. In the first two years of the war they swept about 4,000 mines of all types-moored, magnetic and acoustic. The importance and danger of the work of the minesweepers is indicated by the many awards won by the officers and men of the minesweeping fleet. The crew prepare to drop the Oropesa float overboard and start another sweep for mines. (AP Photo)
