Eighteen men standing on the rolling deck of a neutral cargo boat in December 1940 cheered the British destroyer that met their overjoyed eyes for it meant the end of five months of hazardous adventures. After being assisted aboard they completely overwhelmed the crew with hand-shakes and slaps on the back. Thirteen of the lucky eighteen were members of the 51st Highland Division who were captured in June 1940 during the German advance on the Somme. One night, headed by their major, they escaped, eventually reaching Vichy where they managed to obtain French military uniforms. From Vichy they made their various routes to the South of France, where one again they obtained by devious methods Foreign. (AP Photo)
