Życie w Algierii - Redux
Taher Belabbes (center), a protest leader from the central Algerian city of Ouargla, sits with friends at a coffee shop in the bus station of Algiers on the morning of April 22, 2013. Belabbes is the National Co-ordinator of the League for the Protection of the Rights of the Unemployed. Known to some in the activist community as 'Algeria's Che Guevara' he has worked unify local groups of unemployed people and to work with other protest groups - including the Mothers the Disappeared and the human-rights league - to build a nationwide movement. Though the country has not undergone an 'Arab Spring' style revolution, many Algerians are frustrated by similar issues as in the rest of the region: high levels of unemployment, lack of affordable housing, and disillusionment with the aging, corrupt, and out-of-touch political leadership.
