Activists with Syndicate of the Unemployed meet late at night in an apartment in Ghardaia to organize the next day's protest. Recently, a number of previously separate human rights organizations, unions and youth groups have begun to coordinate their actions, resulting in a more powerful protest movement in the country. Though the country has not undergone an 'Arab Spring' style revolution, many Algerians are frustrated by similar issues as in the rest of the region: high levels of unemployment, lack of affordable housing, and disillusionment with the aging, corrupt, and out-of-touch political leadership.
