Russia, Dzerjinsk, May 15, 2018 From the series "Contaminations" A lake with no water, entirely filled with toxic waste, and it is all but impossible to breathe the air. Walking by the lake, the shore is soft and covered in brown threads that adhere to shoes. The lake is referred to as the "black hole." It is a blend of many chemicals, but what exactly ? There is no data, not even from official ministries. What is known is that there is 6000 cubic meters of liquid waste, 9000 cubic meters of semi-liquid waste, and 55,000 cubic meters of polymerized and hardened waste. The black hole is 18 meters deep and there is no barrier between it and the water table which is at a depth of only a few meters. Nearly 300,000 tons of chemical waste was buried in the surrounding area. Prussic acid, phosgene, ethylene oxide, vinyl chloride, phenol, and derivatives of arsenic, cyanide and chlorine: such neurotoxic substances are in the air which the 300,000 residents have to breathe here in one of the most chemically polluted cities in the world according to the NGO Blacksmith Institute. Les berges sont molles et des filaments marrons restent colles aux semelles. On l'appelle le trou noir. Sa consistance chimique est trcs variee, mais surtout inconnue. Meme les ministcres n'ont pas de donnees. On sait seulement que 6 000 m3 sont des dechets liquides, 9 000 m3 sont semi-liquides et 55 000 m3 sont polymerises, durcis. Le trou noir, profond de 18 mctres, est directement relie r la nappe phreatique qui n'est qu'r quelques mctres profondeur. Prcs de 300 000 tonnes de dechets chimiques neurotoxiques ont ete enfouies dans la campagne alentour. Acide prussique, phosgcne, oxyde d'ethylcne, chlorure de vinyle, phenol, derives d'arsenic, de cyanure et de chlore ; c'est ce que respiraient les 300 000 habitants de la "ville la plus chimiquement
