This place is going to the dogs..... A pair of wild dogs hold each other tightly during a fight. The alpha male and female Asiatic wild dogs looked like they were performing a foxtrot as they unified their bond at the Pench National Park in Sillari, India. Chartered Accountant Indraneel Dani, 40, said, "The Indian wild dogs are critically endangered, so to have been able to find them was a joy in itself. I followed them closely for 30 minutes before they settled down in an open patch of forest. They were a pack of eight and the alpha male and female were courting. Only the Alpha pair breeds in the pack and the rest of the members support the growing family. The pair renews its bonds by cuddling and playfighting during the courtship and it's typical of them to stand on their hind legs to playfully out manoeuvre each other. I had anticipated the behaviour but it's difficult to photograph it as it happens quickly. The intent is never to hurt and there was no aggression in their behavior." "I was in a safari vehicle following the dogs, however it was dusk and I knew the pack would settle down. I allowed them ample space ensuring that their natural behavior was not disturbed. Once the pack settled down the alpha pair began their courtship, I quickly positioned the vehicle to align with the couple and thankfully they couldn't have cared less for my presence." May 2023 The Indian wild dogs are critically endangered , to have have found them was in itself a joy. I had followed them for close to 30 mins before they settled down in an open patch of forest. They were pack of 8 and the alpha male and female were courting. Only the Alpha pair breeds in the pack and the rest of the members support the growing family. The pair renews its bonds by cuddling and playfighting during the courtship and its typical of them to stand on their hind legs to playfully out maneuver each other. I had anticipated the behavior but its difficult to photograph it as it happens quickly. As soon i clicked the picture I knew I had perfectly timed it. i was in a safari vehicle following the dogs , however it was dusk and i kew the pack would settle down. I allowed them ample space ensureing that their natural behavior was not disturbed and once the pack settled down the alpha pair began their courtship, I quickly positioned the vehicle to align with the couple and thankfully they couldn't have cared less for my presence. As mentioned above its a courtship behavior of the Indian wild Dogs where they stand on their hind legs and try to out maneuver their mate. The intent is never to hurt and there was no aggression in their behavior. The Wild Dogs are rare creatures as I have mentioned they are endangered and their numbers are falling due to habitat loss. To have found them was in itself very rewarding , to have an opportunity to photograph them was a bonus. I was aware of their courtship behavior and was hoping photograph them when they stood tall and completely stretched on their hind legs . The fact that I was perfectly aligned to witness their behavior from close quarters made these shots special for me.
