(NYT38) KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Dec. 11, 2001 -- AFGHAN-KARZAI -- The sprawling compound in Kandahar that the spiritual leader of the Taliban Mullah Mohammed Omar called home remains surprisingly intact, its mosque and the central courtyard nearly unscathed by U.S. air attacks. Omar is missing and presumably on the run, but this week, the compound again hummed with intrigue as Hamid Karzai, the man charged with uniting this shredded nation, made it his temporary residence and headquarters. Karzai, center, Afghanistan's interim leader, was greeted by supplicants Tuesday in Kandahar. (Erik Eckholm/The New York Times)
