(NYT21) ROME, Italy -- April 4, 2008 -- APPIAN-WAY-VANDALS-2 -- A bust of Hermes at the Villa Quintili on the ancient Appian Way, the ancient Roman road leading from Rome to Brindisi, April 3, 2008. The ancient Appian Way, which became a national park 20 years ago, is besieged by tomb vandalism, looting and illegal home construction; a vast restoration effort that includes many Roman palaces and tombs has been hampered by funding shortages. The problem underscores how difficult it is for Italy to guard its treasures even if they're not in the middle of the countryside. (Chris Warde-Jones/The New York Times)
