(NYT42) LATROBE, Pa. -- April 3, 2008 -- PA-OBAMA -- A view of Latrobe, Pa., in April 2008. Latrobe claims fame as birthplace of Arnold Palmer, Mr. Rogers, Rolling Rock beer and the banana split. Latrobe was selected last week for its blue-collar "cred" as the backdrop for the announcement by Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania of his endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). But it is hard to tell what any group of voters here truly thinks. Americans have a long tradition of voting against candidates rather than for them. But in the first presidential campaign with an African-American as a serious contender, there may be a new gyration in the way voters think, the need to explain the vote against the candidate who is black.
