(NYT93) OXNARD, Calif. -- Feb. 26, 2008 -- CALIF-TRANSPLANT-TRIAL-2 -- Pictures of her son, Ruben, fill Rosa Navarro's apartment in Oxnard, Calif., in November 2007. "He died without dignity," she said. On a winter night in 2006, a disabled and severely brain-damaged man named Ruben Navarro was wheeled into an operating room at a hospital in San Luis Obispo, Calif. By most accounts, Navarro, 25, was very near death, and doctors hoped he could help sustain other lives by donating his kidneys and liver. But what happened to Navarro quickly went from the potentially life-saving to what law enforcement officials say was criminal. In what is believed to be the first such case in the country, prosecutors have charged the transplant surgeon, Hootan C. Roozrokh, with trying to hasten Navarro's death in order to retrieve his organs sooner. (Jill Connelly/The New York Times)
