(NYT3) UNDATED -- Jan. 9, 2001 -- CHEKHOV-FABRICATED-B&W -- Although Chekhov is considered a master storyteller and one of the founders of modern drama, he died young and left only four plays that are generally acknowledged as great works. For nearly a century directors and performers have tried to squeeze more out of Chekhov. Now, on the stage of the American Repertory Theater here, its artistic director, Robert Brustein, has fabricated a Chekhov evening where none had existed. Chekhov in an undated photo.
