(NYT35) MAKATI CITY, Philippines -- May 30, 2006 -- ADV. FOR SUN. JUNE 4 -- TRAVEL-MANILA-ADV04 -- West meets East at the crowded nightclubs of Malate and Makati City, in May 2006. Philippine tourism has struggled for years against political corruption and, more recently, Islamic terrorism, particularly in the south. But an absence of Westerners has not isolated the country from Western influences. The homegrown hip-hop that has taken hold of the city's youth, and Manila's blend of Malay, Chinese, Spanish and American influences, remains intact. What visitors will find is a trendy, cosmopolitan city that hasn't lost its local flavor. (Daryl Visscher/The New York Times)
