(NYT23) NEW YORK -- May 30, 2006 --DISCOVERING-FISH-4 -- When there were plenty of fish swimming in the oceans and rivers, Americans other than Catholics on Friday had little interest in them. Now that we have discovered the pleasures and benefits of fish, many varieties are nearly depleted and many have been tainted by industrial pollution. But what of the fish you can eat without worrying? Like the shy kid at the dance whose charms aren't readily apparent, unpopularity has kept some in circulation, waiting to be discovered. A mackerel.
