FILE -- (NYT117) GONZALES, La. -- May 31, 2006 -- KATRINA-PETS -- Rescued dogs from the floods of Hurricane Katrina, pictured at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La., south of Baton Rouge, pictured in a Sept. 13, 2005 file photo. Last week, (May 22-27, 2006) the House voted 349-24 to approve the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act, requiring state and local disaster preparedness plans to take into account the needs of people with pets and service animals. Sens. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, and Frank R. Lautenberg, D-N.J., have introduced a bill on the same subject. Their legislation would authorize the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reimburse shelters that provide for animals, which the House bill does not. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
