(NYT323) NEW YORK -- Dec. 1, 2003 -- YEAREND-MADONNA -- 250 people were chosen by lottery to receive signed copies of Madonna's new children's book, "The English Roses," at a Manhattan Barnes & Noble on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. Most of the lottery winners appeared to be in their 30s and 40s - closer to Madonna's current maternal incarnation than her earlier, wilder phases - and many had children with them. Madonna being briefly upstaged Monday by 18-month-old Jeremy Zorek at the event. (James Estrin/The New York Times)
