EXCLUSIVE: **NO NEW YORK POST OR NEWS CORP USAGES** A man who left his elderly Staffordshire bull terrier to starve while lying in a pool of her own urine and faeces has been given a suspended sentence. The RSPCA were called to the home of Alexander Phillip Boyd, 35, at Kirby Road, Dartford, in April by neighbours who were concerned about the condition of his two Staffies, Mercedes and Buster. When RSPCA inspector Deborah Rutherford arrived Boyd spoke to her and said she could come and check on the dogs a few days later, but he was not in when she called round again. Days later on 6 May, Boyd called the RSPCA and told them he wanted to surrender Mercedes and Buster as he could not afford to pay for their vet bills. When Inspector Rutherford arrived, it was clear 13-year-old Mercedes had been left to suffer for a number of weeks, and was too weak to even get off her own bed to relieve herself. Inspector Rutherford said: "Myself and animal rescue officer Emma Byrne went to the property and Mercedes was collapsed on the floor. "She was in very poor body condition with her hips protruding. She was barely responsive and was lying on a urine-soaked quilt under the window in the kitchen. "There was food and water available in the kitchen but her condition meant she couldn't access either." Boyd signed a euthanasia consent form and the RSPCA officers took her to a vet. In her statement, the vet who examined Mercedes, said: "Mercedes was unable to sit up or stand. She was extremely thin. Her muscle condition was poor over her lumbar spine and hind legs. "There was a very strong smell of stale urine caused by the soaking of her fur and skin. "Faecal material was present around her anus, perianal area and the base of her tail." The vet determined there was nothing that could be done to save her and Mercedes was put to sleep.
