Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, at his desk. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin graduated in law from the State University in St Petersburg in 1975. After graduation he worked for the KGB's foreign intelligence service before leaving in 1990 to become initially head of external relations then deputy mayor under Anatoly Sobchak, the mayor of St Petersburg. In 1996 he was recommended for a position in the presidential administration eventually reaching deputy chief-of-staff before taking charge of Russia's new security services, the Federal Security Bureau (FSB) in 1998 and subsequently the Security Council. On the resignation of Boris Yeltsin in December 1999 he was appointed acting President. During subsequent elections in March 2000 he received a majority of the vote and was inaugrated as President of the Russian Federation in May 2000.
