Mr Han Htwe next to one of two sites he is drilling at Htankai oil field, Minhla Township, Myanmar, on 1st July 2015. This site had already been drilled once, but the previous team failed to get through the water layer which needs to be crossed before reaching oil. Mr Han Htwe spent around $4200 on the rights and equipment to drill this site and was confident that he could get through the water layer that had beaten the previous team. With oil prices at around $100 per barrel, and his team's wages beng paid daily whether they hit oil or not, this site needed to produce at least 50 barrels of oil in order to break even - when we returned three days later they had still not made it through the water. Mr Han Htwe's yellow hardhat was the only piece of safety clothing we saw in three days at the field. (Matt Grace for NRGI)
