U Thant Zin of the Ayeyarwaddy West Development Organisation (AWDO) talks with Ko Soe Win, a farmer from Meh Beh Kone village in Minbu Township, Myanmar, about an application for formal ownership of the land his family has farmed for generations, 2nd July 2015. Ko Soe Win hopes that if he can obtain formal ownership paperwork he can apply for compensation for the six oil wells that have been dug on his land, but the process is long and complicated. In 1969, 13 villages in this area were taken over by the military government and designated part of the Man Oil Field - oil has been extracted from the area for 45 years with no compensation paid to landowners. Recent reforms in Myanmar have opened the doors for landowners to try to claim retroactive compensation for the taking of their land for drilling. More than 600 wells have been drilled in this small area and only the most recent, number 669, involved a significant payment to the landowner. Not a single landowner has been paid any retroactive compensation for the destruction and usage of their land despite continued usage under the new administration. (Matt Grace for NRGI)
