Afghanistan, Kabul, 24 August 2021 Members of the notorious CIA-backed Afghan paramilitary unit known as 01 try to control crowds of Afghans trying to gain entry through the northwestern gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport. The paramilitaries used liberal bursts of warning fire to try to control the crowds. Those trying to get through to the airport and on to evacuation flights, are among the tens of thousands who have attempted to do the same since the Taliban took control of the Afghan capital on August 15. Even those with valid travel documents, however, have found it incredibly difficult to navigate the treacherous paths and gateway to the airport, where Taliban fighters, U.S. Marines, British soldiers and Afghan paramilitary units control access. The northwestern gate, today, was controlled. Late today, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, declared that Afghans wanting to flee the country would be forbidden from accessing the airport.
