John Hodgson, joint head of Special Collections standing in the old 'Art alcove' of the John Ryland Gallery, an area not open to the public, but used by researchers and PHD students. As Head of Special Collections, John is in charge of the management of all the library's collections - manuscripts, archives, rare books, visual materials (1.3 million items). The Library has a team of over 30 curators, imaging specialists, and a reading room team. "This is not a Museum, it is a working and living library that is collecting all the time, with visiting scholars from all over the world. It is a working collection. Lot of the work happens out of sight from the general public. The collections are here to be used. What the public sees is the tip of the iceberg." He says about the library. Hodgson has been working there for approximately 28 years. "I still feel I am scratching the surface. I am still learning."
