Naturally occurring oysters hang on to rocks at the Town of Fairhaven Boat Launch in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, on Thu., April 22, 2021. Steve Kirk, a Coastal Restoration Ecologist with The Nature Conservancy, and says Kirk that the SOAR program he helps manages purchases unsellable farmed oysters to relocate to restoration areas in hopes of recreating this sort of naturally-occurring oyster bed. The SOAR program is the Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration program partnership between The Nature Conservancy, Pew Charitable Trusts, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and aims to restore oyster reefs and filter water.
