Afghanistan, Nangarhar Province, Mohmand Valley, 25 July 2018 An F16 flies above Combat Outpost (COP) Blackfish, in Nangarhar Province's Achin District, flying low and loud and deploying flares in a so-called "show of force." Prior to the show of force, the pilots of the two F16s circling the base dropped several bombs on ridge lines around the base upon the request of the U.S. Army Operational Detachment Alpha's (ODA) Joint Tactical Air Controller (JTAC). This evening, the JTAC had the F16 pilots drop several bombs on the ridge-line overlooking the base. The bombs were dropped for the purpose of "terrain denial", which supposedly dissuades enemy fighters from occupying high ground from which to mount attacks against the base. Privately, however, the JTAC told me that the reason for requesting many of the strikes is more prosaic. Reasons include allowing inexperienced pilots to drop bombs in "combat", to keep the JTAC's own numbers up so as to avoid the retraining that is required if he doesn't drop enough. The JTAC said he had requested about 30 air strikes (out of a total of more than 100) during troops in contact (TIC) scenarios this deployment.
