While on a mission to check on the progress and help with the construction of roads and the Afghan National Army's (ANA) Ron Meesha (Ron is the Pashtu word for OP) the furthest point up the Mohmand Valley cleared of ISIS-K and now secured by ANA forces, members of a U.S. Army Green Beret Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) team monitor a hillside overlooking Ron Meesha after a Defensive Fighting Position (DFP) was spotted by Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms in the sky above. Once the target had been identified the Air Force Combat Controller attached to the ODA coordinated "fires assets" (weapons) and sought approval for a strike with those higher up his chain of command. At one point it looked as though HIMARS rockets were going to be fired from nearby MSS Maddog, for which the Combat Controller was "de-conflicting airspace" so as to avoid the rockets hitting friendly air assets, but ultimately approval for the strike was not given. Later, it was explained to me that it is often the case that an ODA on a new mission will often have many kinks in their process to approve strikes to iron out with higher levels. In this case, one link in the chain didn't believe the strike was a priority and so didn't pass it up to the next link in the chain of command. The ODA on the ground were visibly frustrated by the bureaucracy required for them to, as they saw it, do their job.
The villages the ODA drove through to reach Ron Meesha were often badly damaged by the fighting that had won them freedom from ISIS-K and residents were returning to rebuild their homes and lives after many had fled almost two years of ISIS-K rule.
