"I used to look at oil wells as the most beautiful thing in the world, but then I realized that’s a bad side to these things if they're not properly dealt with." He has worked in oil and gas his entire career, first drilling and working on wells nearby Strathcona County before working around the world consulting on projects and creating new technology for submersible pumps. Much of his business was in Libya and, after the war there in 2011, he started helping his parents to manage a well on their land in Didsbury, Alberta. As he pushed the company to compensate his parents, he started to understand the problems created by the aging well inventory in Alberta and set about looking for particularly complex cases where he could represent landowners' interests. "As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing political about this problem," he said, "remember, we're going to have to keep these wells from leaking for all of time."
