Wray Perez, president of the Wamp?s indigenous community poses for a portrait in Maranon river. This ethnic group was the first in Latin America to declare autonomy over the territory. They claim that if they do not, the Peruvian state will destroy the forest and its people will not withstand climate change. This indigenous group living thousands of years ago, dispersed in the dense forest, on a territory of 1.3 million hectares in the departments of Amazonas and Loreto, northern Peru, has tired of watching invaders clearing their forests and polluting the rivers with mercury used to extract gold from the earth. Wampis realized that only with a strong, legal and organizational structure would they have a voice to defend not only their people, but the future of the forest. After numerous meetings among their leaders, finally in 2015, representatives of 27 Wampis communities, with a total population of 15,000 people, came together, invoked international recognition of indigenous peoples rights and created the Wamp?s Nation - a territorial government. autonomous - to defend its territory and its sustenance from the increasing pressure of extractive industries.
