Nasze ciała to pole bitwy - NYT
A century after the “Tulsa Race Massacre,” in which a white mob destroyed 35 square blocks of Greenwood, a successful black economic hub in Tulsa, Oklahoma then-known as “Black Wall Street,” archaeological excavations have begun at the possible site of a mass grave in Oaklawn Cemetery, on November 12, 2022. They are searching for the bodies of as many as 300 people believe to have been dumped in unmarked graves. Oklahomans of color still face huge gaps in wealth, health, and opportunity reflecting a long history of violence and discrimination. Across Oklahoma and the American south, abortion bans mean that more people, especially those with low incomes and from marginalized communities, will be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. According to CDC data, Black women are more than three times as likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than White women. States that already outlaw abortion - or soon will - are noted for having the weakest social services in the country, making them the least supportive of mothers and children. In May of this year, Oklahoma became the first state in the country to successfully outlaw nearly all abortions from the moment of conception on, even before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned a month later. They have now been joined by at least 13 states as laws restricting the procedure take effect following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and about a dozen more are likely to follow. This is a seismic shift for the United States, and in Oklahoma its impacts are rippling across an entire ecosystem of health workers, advocates, medical students, and uncountable women whose futures have been suddenly thrust into the unknown.
