While America’s religious community is divided over the issue of abortion, the strong opposition of conservative Christian churches to abortion and the use of religious admonitions in most anti-abortion efforts means the religious right has played an outsized role in the pro-life movement.
In May of this year, Oklahoma became the first state in the country to successfully outlaw nearly all abortions from the moment of conception on, even before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned a month later. They have now been joined by at least 13 states as laws restricting the procedure take effect following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and about a dozen more are likely to follow. This is a seismic shift for the United States, and in Oklahoma its impacts are rippling across an entire ecosystem of health workers, advocates, medical students, and uncountable women whose futures have been suddenly thrust into the unknown.
