She was so impressed by the care and help of the escorts that she began volunteering with them, and then later applied for a nursing position inside. Abortion providers and advocates in Oklahoma and beyond have been scrambling to figure out how to process the fallout of the Supreme Court ruling, what to tell women in need, and how to navigate an increasingly precarious reality. In May of this year, Oklahoma became the first state in the country to successfully outlaw nearly all abortions from the moment of conception on, even before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade was overturned a month later. They have now been joined by at least 13 states as laws restricting the procedure take effect following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and about a dozen more are likely to follow. This is a seismic shift for the United States, and in Oklahoma its impacts are rippling across an entire ecosystem of health workers, advocates, medical students, and uncountable women whose futures have been suddenly thrust into the unknown.
