Nyaope (also known as whoonga or wunga) is a highly addictive drug cocktail that is popular among South African youth. A view of a hostel in Sebokeng township near Soweto that is notorious by the huge amount of drug trafficking. Nyaope, a highly addictive drug cocktail is plaguing the townships in South Africa. It is popular among youngsters in the poor townships because it is cheap and highly addictive. The powder-like substance contains a combination of low-grade heroin and anti-retroviral drugs (ARV). To keep the portions cheap it allegedly also contains a cocktail of milk powder, rat poison, bicarbonate of soda and pool cleaner. Use of the street drug has been spreading throughout the country since 2010, and was made illegal by the South African Drug Trafficking Act on March 28, 2014.
