Letni obóz Azovets dla ukraińskich dzieci - Redux

Ukraine's "Azovets" summer camp was launched last year (2015) by the controversial far-right AZOV battalion, with the intention of hosting children whose parents are fighting on the front lines of the war in Donbass. Azovets is also intended to be a boot camp for troubled kids with impending criminal offenses. Ukrainian children who are unrelated to the war are also welcome, although it is more unusual that they join. There are various rounds of this 1-week long camp taking place at the edge of Kyiv this summer 2016. Children are taught many skills related to army, such as first aid and applying tourniquets, loading AKs (although all weapons are deactivated), self defense, boating and how to use camouflage. An emphasis is also placed on discipline, fitness and patriotic knowledge (about the history of Ukraine excluding Russian figures). The leaders of the camp are all volunteer fighters from Azov. Azov has a rather controversial reputation for being openly fascist and for embracing a symbol that resembles the SS's wolf hook ("Wolfsangel" in German) as their insignia -- which they say signifies the concept of "National Identity". Children at the camp wear this symbol on their shirts, although they have very little knowledge of what it implies. Despite the negative influences this camp may have on children, some kids here feel they can be closer to their parents who they miss dearly -- and they can relate to the experiences their parents may face in the far east, which could create comfort in some kids' minds.
