Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip state visit to Turkey - 15 May 2008
CHESS THAN IMPRESSED
As part of their state visit to Turkey the Queen and Prince Philip couldn't have known that browsing a few stalls selling Turkish goods would leave them faced with such an overt statement about Christian/Muslim relations.
It all seemed innocent enough when the Duke browsed a selection of chess boards, but closer inspection of the pieces may give some insight into the political/religious feelings of the craftsmen who made them.
One set pits knights of the Crusade against Arab fighters in order to recreate the Crusades, in which Christian Europe waged a religious war against, amongst others, Muslims.
The original goal of these bloody and violent Crusades was the recapturing of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule.
Similarly, an aspect of modern Christian/Muslim relations was demonstrated through another chess set that features President Bush as a pawn; along with Osama Bin Laden, Sadam Hussein, Tony Blair, and replicas of The Twin towers.
The Duke seemed blissfully unaware of the connotations of the items he was browsing, or was too displomatic to acknowledge them, and simply seemed to be admiring the excellent craftmanship.
