Queen Elizabeth II waves to the crowd at Epsom Downs, 2002, for the running of the Derby. * 21/06/02 Queen Elizabeth II waving to the crowd at Epsom Downs, 2002, for the running of the Derby. The Queen today becomes the fourth longest-reigning monarch in 1,000 years of English history. Only three royal ancestors have enjoyed greater longevity on the throne - Queen Victoria, George III and Henry III. Elizabeth II, who acceded on February 6, 1952, overtakes Edward III, who was proclaimed King on January 25, 1327 and died on June 21, 1377, reigning for 50 years and 148 days. Taking into account leap years during her reign, the Queen has today reigned for 50 years and 149 days. 06/11/02 : The Queen was officially opening a memorial to pay tribute to the almost five million Indian, Pakistani, African and Caribbean volunteers who served Britain in the first and second world wars. The Memorial Gates, on Constitution Hill, near Hyde Park Corner in London, will be inaugurated by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in a ceremony this afternoon. The Royal couple will be joined by a mounted escort from India and Pakistan accompanying their car from Buckingham Palace to Constitution Hill. 29/5/03: The Queen was meeting some of the 1953 Everest heroes whose ascent of the worlds highest mountain added lustre to her Coronation. With the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen was attending a show in London entitled Endeavour On Everest to mark the 50th anniversary of the first climbing of the 29,035ft peak by John Hunt s British expedition team. 02/06/03 : Queen Elizabeth II waving to the crowd at Epsom Downs. A service to mark the Queen's 50th anniversary of her Coronation takes place at Westminster Abbey. *13/12/03: The Queen was recovering in hospital after surgery on her knee and to remove benign lesions from above an eyebrow. Buckingham Palace said the surgical procedures, performed under general anaesthetic yesterday, were successful and that the Queen was due to leave London's King Edward VII Hospital over the weekend. 31/10/04: The Queen is set to have an innovative hydro-electric power scheme installed at Windsor Castle. Two turbines in an enclosure at Romney Weir on the River Thames are expected to be built early next year. The energy-efficient project, understood to be costing around 900,000, will be funded by Npower Renewables.
