Albert Adams is considered one of the most influential black South African artists of the twentieth century. Following his death his artists studio and works are about to be split up and sent to various museums. The studio is a time capsule of his work in a small corner of Camden. Photographer, Steve Merrick: 'It was odd to photograph the space because his presence was all around, small portions of his life in a pre-computerized world. His partner Ted Glennon is now 82 years old. Ted turned out to be a time capsule in his own way too, the two men were together for over 44 years, as I interviewed him about Albert's work I realised just how much the world has changed since the 60's. I also understood the motivation for much of Albert Adams's work on human rights abuses and injustice. In some respects the words that follow are mildly offensive but in truth they reflect a darker world of racism that hopefully the UK left behind in the 1970's. His last set of works are all centred around the Abu Graib prison abuses in Iraq. I guess if you were born into apartheid then that personal struggle with humanity wouldn't stop just there.' ?
