Village of Hamed Ela. The interior of an Afar hut has been turned into a bar, the "Mireaia Coffee House". Here you can drink coffee, smoke hookah, and chew leaves of Khat, one of the favorite activities of the Afars. The Khat is a flowering plant native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Among communities from these areas, khat chewing has a history as a social custom dating back thousands of years. The Khat contains a substance, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite and euphoria. In this picture a portrait of Ramel Solomne, age 17, smoking a water pipe.
