The towns of Marmato and Segovia have been dedicated to mining for generations, but their methods are antiquated and risky by modern standards. The small-scale traditional miners are also easy prey for criminal and paramilitary groups and the government had hoped to modernize and formalize the practice with the presence of Gran Colombia Gold. The miners and their representatives have fought back with multiple legal strategies and have frustrated the company's advances.
