Bethanys body hair positivity is always a celebration, ESSEX, UK, THIS WOMAN made the radical decision to ditch the razor and embark on a journey of self-acceptance as a hairy lady – despite being spat at on the street, misgendered and told that women don’t have beards.
Realising her lifelong goal of removing her body hair was born from shame rather than self-love, she turned her back on hair removal altogether and poured that money into launching a groundbreaking media platform celebrating hairy bodies
The Sassy Show has 2.5k followers on Instagram and the space offers safety and acceptance for all.
At the age of 28, Bethany Burgoyne, now 34, from Essex, UK reached a turning point.
“I put down the razor and wax after realising how heartbreaking it was that my biggest goal in life was to be rid of my body hair,” she shared.
“Instead of spending the money I was saving up for laser hair removal, I decided to invest it in building my own media platform for hairy folks and ALL bodies to be celebrated in their unique appearance.
“I wanted to become the example I so longed to see Ãł a hairy, sexy femme.”
Bethany’s appearance has since become both a statement and a conversation starter, attracting messages from others grappling with their own body image issues, especially those with conditions such as PCOS.
“It’s 70% lovely, encouraging and supportive, people will often say how ‘brave’ I am,” she said.
“I've had so many people come and share how they struggle with their body and facial hair.
“I've loved how it's become a conversation starter for people about what they also wish to accept about themselves.”
But not all responses have been kind.
“The other 30% of feedback is full of questions about my gender, speculations about my gender and being told that ‘women don't have beards’,” she shared.
“I've been misgendered and told to show people my dick, I've been shouted at on the street, spat at, confronted and laughed at.
“I've had people say loudly ‘what the fuck’ as I've walked past them in the street or in a shop.
“And I've been told to ‘sort my hair out’. All this I have learnt to respond with a massive smile and laugh lightly.”
Bethany, is the founder of The Sassy Show Ãł a bold, body-positive and sex-positive digital platform that shines a light on creatives and challenges how gender and femininity are portrayed.
She is now at the heart of an international community that dares to celebrate all bodies, especially those that do not conform to rigid beauty ideals.
“I’m a sex-positive creative professional sharing knowledge about intimacy, kink, and sexual pleasure as liberation, expression and empowerment,” Bethany explained.
“As a podcaster and performer, I founded The Sassy Show aiming to transform the portrayal of women and gender in the media.”
Despite the hate, Bethany has found something far more powerful - self-love.
“I LOVE my body. I used to hate my hair, always monitoring its growth and struggling to become intimate with people for fear of my cactus stubble being a turn off.
“Now I don’t think twice about removing it, I just look in the mirror and love how I finally have accepted myself.”
That transformation, she says, has made her feel “100%” more beautiful.
“It’s a feeling from the inside out of knowing I am setting my own principles of what beauty is and how to walk away from toxic standards that we hold ourselves to.
“I love defying the expectation that all women should remove their body and facial hair to be accepted. I am a reminder to myself of this new level of self-acceptance.”
Online and in person, her body hair has sparked unexpected encounters Ãł from the offensive to the oddly enlightening.
“Someone once walked up to me in a club, grabbed my beard and asked me ‘are you a man or a girl’
“They then started sharing all the ways they were struggling to grow their hair and told me about the lengths to which they've gone to stimulate hair growth. It was a surprising (and intrusive) introduction to what became a very wholesome conversation.”
Through The Sassy Show, Bethany has built a network that not only embraces self-expression but gives others permission to be vulnerable, authentic, and brave.
“I've been told by strangers that I've made them feel less alone, that my appearance has helped them accept themselves more. That I have deep integrity and allow people to be themselves because I, myself, am nonjudgmental and accepting of others’ appearance.”
Her advice for anyone considering growing out their body hair is simple.
“Take it slow, be patient with yourself and all the emotions that come up as you start to grow. Share how you're feeling with people you might be sharing your body with in the same way. This can help bypass painful conversations or insensitive comments. From there you will feel more confident to face the world.”
