PHOTO: EAST NEWS/AFP Pope John Paul II prays 13 June 1987 in Warsaw in front of the church of Saint Stanislas at the tomb of dissident priest Jerzy Popieluszko, a defender of civic and religious freedom against Poland?s communist authorities. The pro-Solidarity labour union priest Popieluszko was kidnapped and murdered in October 1984 at the age of 35. Three political police officers were found responsible for the murder in 1985 and sentenced to 25, 15 and 14 years in prison. Their immediate superior was sentenced to 25 years in jail.
