An oxpecker and buffalo see eye to eye. The buffalo lets the oxpecker peck at its entire body to eat parasites and flies. The oxpecker was getting a hearty meal and the buffalo a grooming service and relief from flies in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. David Cox, 73, from Gloucester said, "The oxpecker is drawn to the buffalo because of the parasites and flies and has no problems with landing on any part of these large creatures. No orifice is left untouched by the Oxpeckers as they delve into ears and mouths,” “We'd been watching a large herd of buffalo resting near a waterhole for some time. It came to my attention that many of the animals had red-billed oxpeckers busily pecking away at them. Personally, I love the close-up of the bird and eye of the buffalo. They were seemingly staring at each other and it seemed to signify the symbiotic relationship they have.” Please byline: David Cox/Solent News © David Cox/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** Images were taken Sept 2023 in Kruger National Park in South Africa We'd been watching a large herd of Buffalo resting near a waterhole for sometime. It came to my attention that many of the animals had Red-Billed Oxpeckers busily pecking away at them. These birds have a mutualistic relationship with Buffalo and other grazers such as antelopes and Zebras. The Oxpecker is drawn to the Buffalo because of the parasites and flies and has no problems with landing on any part of these large creatures. They get a hearty meal and the Buffalo benefits from a grooming service and relief from the pesky flies. No orifice is left untouched by the Oxpeckers as they delve into ears and mouths. Personally I love the close-up of the bird and eye of the Buffalo. They were seemingly staring at each other and it seemed to signify the symbiotic relationship they have. Times moved on so I'm now 73 years young now. Let me know if you need to know anything else! Regards
