An Afghan guerrilla stands atop a damaged Soviet-built armored vehicle left behind by the Red Army and Afghan communist troops at the Chawni garrison outside Jail, 9 miles (15 kms) from Pakistan border in Afghanistan?s eastern Paktia province, May 24, 1988. Communist forces evacuated the base on May 15, apparently under guerilla pressure. The Rebels claimed that 250 Soviet and 4,000 Afghan soldiers evacuated Chawni by armored column with helicopter support. Some of the damaged vehicles left behind were salvageable.
