An undated computer-generated photo based on multiple orbital observations provided by NASA shows Mars' Gale Crater, a 96-mile-wide depression near the planet's equator. In Nature Geoscience on April 1, 2019, scientists reported that the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter detected methane gas in that crater in the summer of 2013, but they cannot say yet whether the source is biological or geological.
