The two decade after his marriage to Lou Henry were spent in China, where they swept bullets off the porch during the Boxer uprising; in California, Burma, New York, London. Hoover became a partner in a London firm, paid $500,000 to meet an employe???s defalcations, started at scratch to build a new fortune, carried on far-flung enterprises employing tens of thousands of men, not one of whom ever called a strike against a Hover-managed enterprise. World War I brought a new phase of the engineer???s life. The mining engineer who walked into the American embassy in London one October day in 1914 walked out a humanitarian. Two months later he formed the Commission for Relief in Belgium, which performed a service which is history. In recognition of it, be received many honors, none greater than the gratitude of the Belgium people and their rulers. He is shown with King Albert, Queen Elizabeth and Crown Prince Leopold on a San Francisco Bay ferry in 1920.
