AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
This previously unpublished photo of French Captain Georges Guynemer was taken at Piennes, France on Sept. 24, 1916, in front of his shot-down Spad. The publication marks the 35th anniversary of the French Air Ace???s death. He was shot down over Belgium on Sept. 11, 1917. This picture was made by Alfred Monatte, 63, of Fontain Pleau shown Sept. 15, 1952, who, as a corporal pilot in the French Air Force during world war one, led a relief party to Guynemer after he was shot down by a French Anti-Aircraft Battery in a dog-fight during which he had just shot down three German planes. The battery was aiming at a German Fokker plane and Guynemer flew into the exploding shell. Guynemer brought down the damaged plane without injury, landing it on its back. He received a bullet wound in one leg during the dogfight. (AP Photo)
