After homes had been occupied by the 8th army a few of a highland regiment explored the ruins of Leptis Magna, Feb. 19, 1943 two miles to the east. This ancient city, formerly called Lebgy was founded about 1,000 B.C. by the Phoenicians and became an important port. Leptis was conquered in turn by the Carthagians, Greek, Rome and then the Garamanty, a nomad race from the interior. Reconquered by the Romans it enjoyed period of great prosperity around 200 A.D. an invasion by another inland race, the Asturiens, in 363 B.C. started its decline which continued more or less steadily during the occupation by the Vandals in the 5th century and the Arabs in the 7th century. Extensive excavations were started by the Italians in 1920 and many archaeological treasures have been unearthed. Picture shows: A general view of the arena. (AP Photo)
