This is a facsimile of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty between the United States of America and the French Republic, shown on April 16, 1953. The treaty secured for the United States from France nearly a million square miles for total payments of $27,267,622. The negotiations for the purchase were completed April 30, 1803 while Thomas Jefferson was president. The sale purchase acquired a vast sweep of mountains and prairies, forests and meadows, extending from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. (AP Photo)
