A replica of Fort Clatsop, the fort where the expedition of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark spent the winter of 1805-1806, stands under towering fir trees near Astoria, Ore., in this April 29, 2003 photo. On Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, the Bush Administration announced a plan to expand Fort Clatsop National Memorial in Oregon and rename the site as the Lewis & Clark National Historical Park. The move comes as the nation celebrates the bicentennial of the 1803-1806 expedition to the Pacific Ocean by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The plan would add three sites along the lower Columbia River to the federal park, expanding it for the first time into Washington state. (AP Photo/Don Ryan, file)
