On September 9, 1934 the U.S. steamship Morro Castle caught fire off the New Jersey coast, killing 134. Surviving were 119 crew and only 15 passengers. The ship snapped its tow lines and drifted within a few hundred feet of the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, N.J. In this photo crowds gathered on the beach in Asbury Park to get a look at the still smoldering ship. (AP Photo)
