AP Historical Hard Drive 1997
Undated photo of the Athenee Palace Hotel in Bucharest showing damage caused by fighting in central Bucharest during the 1989 uprising that toppled Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The hotel opened its doors again Tuesday, Oct 28, 1997, under Hilton management. In its wartime heyday, the Athenee was the picture of high intrigue: Nazi officers, diplomats, spies and refugees passed one another in its corridors. Built in 1914 next to Romania s Royal Palace, the Athenee symbolized the period between the world wars when Bucharest was dubbed the Paris of the East.(AP Photo)
